Criminals Going Green - International Perspectives on Environmental Crime

“Going green” is a catch-all term for efforts to live and work in a more environmentally friendly way. Unfortunately, criminal organizations have also been going green in a much more negative sense of the term - by pursuing ways to profit off environmental destruction and degradation.

Environmental crime is an emerging risk area that encompasses illegal logging, mining, fishing, pollution and wildlife trafficking, and has strong ties to other illicit typologies like corruption and money laundering. It’s also a big business, generating hundreds of billions of dollars worth of proceeds each year for the sophisticated criminal organizations involved.

While the overall picture is bleak, the good news is that financial crime professionals can help counter this burgeoning sector of illicit finance, and cut off the money flows that fuel environmental destruction. In this session, hear from experts as they define the scope and scale of environmental crime, detail the bad actors behind it, and provide you with case studies and red flags to detect and prevent it.

What’s New with Elder Fraud and Financial Abuse – Updated Trends and Typologies

When it comes to the creativity and callousness of global fraud syndicates, they seem to know no bounds – particularly when it comes to the country’s most physically fragile and fiscally vulnerable community: seniors.

In all, scammers pilfered more than $3.4 billion from older Americans last year, according to an FBI report released in April 2024, revealing a rise in losses through increasingly sophisticated criminal tactics to dupe older individuals into giving up their life savings.

Losses from scams reported by Americans over the age of 60 last year were up roughly 11 percent over the year before, according to the FBI's report. The report also noted a surge in more corporeal schemes to drain bank accounts involving sending couriers – some part of the illicit group, others victims themselves – in person to collect cash or gold from victims.

This continued rise puts more of an onus on bank fraud and AML teams to both inform their senior customers before a scam happens and be more attuned and agile when they suspect a customer is in the process of being scammed. What can your bank teams do to protect customers, outwit scammers and report actions quickly and completely to law enforcement? Find out in this relevant and riveting panel.

FinCrime Career Outlook - What’s Hot, Whats Not and What Skills to Cultivate in the New AI AML world

The rise of artificial intelligence and generative AI is set to disrupt the financial crime compliance landscape, but how much it reshapes the job market is an issue on minds of all professionals at all levels, from low rung risk rankers to tech-savvy algorithm tuners and more.

While technologies along the lines of large language models and machine learning could automate certain routine tasks like transaction monitoring and fraud detection, creating new efficiencies, experts warn this could make some entry-level and analyst roles redundant.

At the same time, an increased need for human oversight, model risk management, and ethical AI governance may create new high-skilled roles. Roles leveraging human expertise, like enhanced due diligence investigations, anti-money laundering policy development, and cybersecurity threat hunting could be more in-demand.

This panel explores the evolving job market, with recruiters and compliance leaders weighing in on the skills and roles that will be critical in the AI era.
